DAILY ITINERARY Day 1: Depart USA Your trip begins with an overnight transatlantic flight for the Italian vacation of a lifetime. Day 2: Venice This morning we will arrive in the powerfully romantic city of Venice, which is built on 118 small islands traversed by an intricate canal network. This wonderland is like nothing you will find anywhere else in the world. The afternoon is free for you to head to St. Mark's Square, the heart of Venice. Perhaps you will visit St. Mark's Basilica, one of the greatest buildings in Europe, featuring exquisite mosaics and detailed carvings. This evening, enjoy a welcome reception hosted by your Tour Director. Accommodation: Ai Mori D'Oriente or similar. Day 3: Venice After breakfast this morning your guide will take you on a delightful walking tour of this 'City of Islands'. On our tour we will see St. Mark's Square and Basilica, the Bell Tower, the Clock Tower and the Bridge of Sighs. Our tour will conclude at the Doges' Palace, which you can visit at your leisure. This afternoon is free for additional sightseeing. Dinner tonight will be at the hotel. Accommodation: Ai Mori D'Oriente or similar. (B,D) Day 4: Villa La Palagina, Tuscany This morning we will leave Venice for a scenic journey into the Tuscan countryside to the majestic Villa La Palagina. Along the way we will stop in Bologna, home to the oldest university in the world. We continue on to our splendid Tuscan Villa in the heart of the Chianti hills, which has been the vacation place for noble Florentine families since the sixteenth century. Explore the extensive park of Italian style gardens and age-old trees that completely surround the villa. Accommodation: Villa La Palagina or similar. (B,D) Day 5: Pisa This morning we will leave the Villa and visit the town of Pisa. Not to be missed is the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. There will be time to shop and sample the local restaurants. In the late afternoon we wind our way through the rich Tuscan countryside before arriving in the city of Florence. Accommodation: De La Pace or similar. (B) Day 6: Florence After breakfast this morning we will set off on tour through the bustling city of Florence. Along the way we will see the Cathedral, the Signoria Square. Our tour concludes at the Academy of Fine Arts home to Michelangelo's "David". After seeing many of Florence's attractions, you will be on your own for the afternoon to explore parks, shops, markets and cafes at your leisure. Accommodation: De La Pace or similar. (B,D) Day 7: Siena & Rome Today, drive through the beautiful countryside to Siena. This fine medieval city sits on gentle hills between three river valleys. Take a walking tour through the maze of narrow streets to one of the finest squares in Italy, the Piazza Del Campo. Visit the 13th century Cathedral to see the many works of art including the black and white marble walls and columns. This afternoon we will drive to Rome for a panoramic tour of the city before we settle into our hotel. Accommodation: Del Gianicolo or similar. (B) Day 8: Vatican & St. Peter's This morning tour the Vatican, the world smallest, yet wealthiest independent state. See the Hall of Tapestries and the Maps Gallery but the highlight of the tour will be the Sistine Chapel, where we can marvel at the famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo containing his well known paintings, the 'Creation' and 'Last Judgement'. Then explore St. Peter's Square, with Bernini's 284 columns, before entering St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in Christendom. This evening, enjoy dinner hosted by your Tour Director. Accommodation: Del Gianicolo or similar. (B,D) Day 9: Rome at Leisure Today will be on your own to explore the heart of Rome. Not to be missed is the Colosseum, or the Spanish Steps. Continue on to the Pantheon, built over 2,000 years ago to honor Caesar Augustus. Cross the famous shopping street of Via Del Corso to the splendid Baroque Trevi Fountain with its rocks, tritons, Neptune's chariot and rushing waters. Throw a coin into the fountain to ensure your return to Rome. Accommodation: Del Gianicolo or similar. (B) Day 10: Pompeii & Amalfi Coast This morning we will leave Rome for the sea-side city of Naples. Along the way we will visit the ruins of Pompeii, the ancient city destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Walk through the Roman Forum, Market Place and Home of the "Vetti" to see narrow streets and luxurious villas frozen in time. This afternoon we will check into our hotel. Accommodation: Grand Hotel Europa Palace or similar. (B) Day 11: Amalfi Coast Take a drive along the spectacular Amalfi Coast today, one of Europe's most beautiful shorelines. Brightly colored houses hug the cliffs amidst lush gardens and olive-green slopes, hovering over the clear sea below. Explore Amalfi, seeing historic buildings built between the 10th and 13th centuries. Tonight your Tour Director will host a farewell dinner at the hotel. Accommodation: Grand Hotel Europa Palace or similar. (B,D) Day 12: Return to USA After breakfast we depart for the airport for your homebound flight. You may choose to extend your stay in Rome or another Italian city. (B) |
