Music and Passion with Oberammergau After surviving the 30 Year War and the Black Plague the people of Oberammergau swore to perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. The first performance was held in 1634. 2010 marks the next performance and should not be missed. While enjoying this tour you will not only stay right in the village of Oberammergau and experience the full drama of the Passion Play, but also will enjoy the musical heritage of Budapest, Vienna and Salzburg, and many highlights of Germany. DAILY ITINERARY Day 1: Depart USA Your trip begins when you board your flight. (Your airfare is not included in the tour price). Relax and enjoy the in-flight meal service and onboard entertainment. Day 2: Arrive in Budapest Upon arrival in Budapest, claim your bags and a representative will meet you in the arrivals Hall and transfer you to your Budapest hotel for your two night stay. This afternoon join your tour director for a welcome reception and briefing. Accommodation: Budapest. Day 3: Budapest We will enjoy a panoramic tour of Budapest, the Queen of the Danube this morning. We will visit both sides of the river – Buda, and Pest. Highlights of the day will be Mathias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion. After enjoying some free time in the afternoon, we will enjoy a welcome dinner and a music-filled cruise this evening. Accommodation: Budapest. (B,D) Day 4: Budapest to Vienna After our included breakfast, we leave Budapest and travel to Vienna. We will then check into our Vienna hotel for our two night stay. Accommodation: Vienna. (B) Day 5: Vienna Today we will enjoy a panoramic tour of Vienna, viewing such sites as St. Stephan’s Cathedral. This afternoon we will visit Schoenbrunn Palace, seat of the Hapsburgs for centuries. This evening is yours to enjoy on your own. Accommodation: Vienna. (B) Day 6: Vienna to Salzburg We leave Vienna and head to Salzburg, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Along the way, we will enjoy the scenery of the Salzkammergut area, where the emperor would spend his summer vacations. The landscape will remind us of some of the scenes from the film “The Sound of Music”. We then arrive in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart. Accommodation: Salzburg. (B) Day 7: Salzburg to Oberammergau Today we will enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town in Salzburg, and a highlight is sure to be the Getreidegasse area and its connection to Mozart. We continue on to Oberammergau for our afternoon arrival. Accommodation: Oberammergau. (B, D) Day 8: Oberammergau The morning is yours to explore the village. This afternoon and evening the pageantry of the Passion Play will unfold as it has since 1634. Every ten years the townspeople come together to share this spectacular event with visitors from all over the world as their thanks for being spared during The Black Plague. Accommodation: Oberammergau. (B, L, D) Day 9: Black Forest We leave Oberammergau and head south to visit one of the most famous fairy tale castles in the world, Neuschwanstein. Then we continue west to the Black Forest for our overnight stay. Accommodation: Black Forest region. (B) Day 10: Black Forest We tour the Black Forest, where the locals are famous for their woodcarving skills, and visit one of the largest clocks in the world in Gutach. Then we continue on to the Schwarzwald Frelicht Museum. This open air museum is designed as a traditional farm village with a collection of authentic buildings brought here from all over Germany. Our drive then takes us to the Baroque city of Wurzburg, our home for the next two nights. Accommodation: Wurburg. (B) Day 11: Rothenburg This morning we travel to Rothenburg, one of the best preserved medieval walled cities in all of Germany, where we will enjoy a walking tour. A highlight is sure to be the ornately carved wooden altarpiece of St. Jacob’s Church. We will have free time for lunch and exploration, and then will return to Wurzburg where the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Tonight we will reconvene for our farewell dinner cruise on the Rhine. Accommodation: Wurburg. (B, D) Day 11: Return the US Leave your hotel and head to Frankfurt for your return flight to the United States. (B) |
